2008 PNW FIRST Regionals, Portland Memorial Coliseum

The Pacific Northwest FIRST Robotics regional competition is over for 2008. Newport (Oregon) High School's Team 2192 and its robot Hal 97365 finished 17th in a field of 55. Hal was one of the robots to stand by for the semifinals in case unthinkable disaster prevented 6 teams from entering their contest. The game was called "Overdrive" and involved three teams allied against three other teams. The object was to circle the ring with the robots, knock the huge balls off the overhead rack and pick the balls up again and put them over the rack as the robot raced forward. Defensive measures were to block or bump other robots, but there was no interference allowed with a robot holding a ball and approaching the rack to hurdle it. Doing that or driving backwards on the track and crossing the line again earned penalty points for that alliance.

Power problems plagued the team on Thursday and Friday, with loose connections in a variety of places. Once those were solved, Hal made good time around the track and efficiently knocked the ball off the rack/hurdle (a glorified "monkey bars").
